There are millions of children around the world who are growing up without families, so if you’re hoping to grow your family through adoption, international adoption is a great way to do it.  

International adoptions, also referred to as intercountry adoptions, are done through an agency that is certified to bring children from another country to yours.  These agencies are often referred to as Hauge Certified meaning they have complied with the requirements of the Hague Convention on the Protection of Children and Co-operation in Respect of Intercountry Adoption (Convention). This is an international agreement to safeguard intercountry adoptions, concluded on May 29, 1993 in The Hague, the Netherlands, the Convention establishes international standards of practices for intercountry adoptions.  

If you choose to do an international adoption, it is very important to find the right agency to help you with that.  Additionally, there are several questions to ask yourself and discuss with your   

  1. What are your motives for wanting to adopt internationally 
  1. What country to you want to adopt from. 
  1. Are you prepared for the process to take significant time. 
  1. Are you ready to do lots of paperwork. 
  1. Do you have the ability to make a significant financial commitment. 
  1. Are you emotionally prepared to address the effects of trauma and institutionalization. 
  1. Are you ready to become a multicultural family. 
  1. Are you prepared to relinquish a measure of control as you go through this process. 
  1. Are you ready to love and commit your life to someone that may seem very different than you.
