Understanding Types of Adoption

Modern adoption allows for varying degrees of contact and connection. Open and semi-open adoptions enable you to remain a part of your child’s life while ensuring they grow in a loving environment. Each adoption plan is unique; you can choose what feels right for you and your child.  If you choose adoption, always remember, that you are not giving up your baby; you are choosing to place your child with a loving, nurturing family who can care for your child in the way you would want, with the assurance that the agency will ensure that your child is thriving.

The vast majority of adoptions today are open, but you can choose the level of openness you believe will work best for you. We briefly describe the adoption types here, but you’ll find even more detail on our “Types of Adoption” Page.

Types of Adoption:

  • Open Adoption: Allows for ongoing contact with the adoptive family and your child. This can include visits, phone calls, and updates. Open adoption can help maintain a connection with your child while providing them with a stable family environment.

  • Semi-open adoption involves limited contact, typically through an adoption agency, which facilitates communication. This can provide a balance between maintaining some level of contact and ensuring privacy.

  • Closed Adoption: Involves no contact with the adoptive family or your child post-adoption. This option may suit those who prefer a clean break and focus on moving forward.
